This presentation will take you on a 10-year journey and tells you about the challenges and opportunities we have faced in developing spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG)-based ‘Plug and Play’ Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). The objective of a BCI is to translate EEG patterns into messages. BCI user generate EEG patterns by performing associated mental tasks that elicit different mental states. Which mental task is best? How to ensure user reliably generate these patterns? How to train the BCI to robustly detect the pattern? How to do this outside of the lab? How with patients? How fully automatically?
The presenter is Prof. Dr. Reinhold Scherer who is the professor in Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) and Neural Engineering (NE) in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering , University of Essex, Colchester, England and co-director of the Essex BCI-NE laboratory. He received his PhD degree in computer science from Technische Universität Graz (TUG), Austria, was postdoctoral researcher at the Department for Computer Science & Engineering, University of Washington, Seattle, USA and deputy head of the Institute of Neural Engineering at TUG. He has gained extensive experience in the fields of direct Brain-Computer interfacing, statistical and adaptive signal processing and robotics-mediated rehabilitation.
