Precise Motor Mapping with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Welcome to ANT Neuro Educational Webinar Series!
In this webinar we discuss and describe a routine to precisely localize cortical muscle representations within the primary motor cortex with TMS based on the functional relation between induced electric fields at the cortical level and peripheral muscle activation. MEPs for different coil positions and orientations are combined with electric field modeling, exploiting the causal nature of neuronal activation to pinpoint the cortical origin of the MEPs. This involves constructing an individual head model using magnetic resonance imaging and computing the induced electric fields with numerical modeling. The cortical muscle representations are determined by relating the TMS-induced electric fields to the MEP amplitudes.
This webinar will be presented by Dr. Konstantin Weise who studied theoretical electrical engineering at the Technische Universität Ilmenau and received his PhD in 2016. From 2016-2022, he was working as a Post-Doc at the Max-Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig on methodological advancements and numerical modeling of transcranial magnetic stimulation. From 2022-2023 he was working in the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University in the field of Tumor Treating Fields. From 2023 he is temporary professor for Electrical Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Leipzig (HTWK) and principal investigator at the MPI for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences Leipzig.
