Language Tasks in Stimulation Mapping

Using language tests to localise function in the brain has come a long way: From home-made tests involving counting and naming weekdays, the benefit of using standardised and patient-tailored protocols has been well established, yet they are not accessible for every facility and language. In this webinar, we introduce one of the available language tests for pre- and intraoperative mapping under stimulation, the VAN-POP, that triggers language production through naming nouns and verbs in a small sentence. We discuss the advantages of the tests, recommendations about how to choose between them and their items and how to possibly adapt them to new languages.

This webinar will be presented by Dr. Ann-Katrin Ohlerth who is a clinical neurolinguist, currently located as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. With a background in linguistics and further education in neuroscience and its application in the clinic, she dedicated her PhD, completed in 2022, to improving the depth of linguistically valid tests during peri-operative mapping of language. By carefully designing and tailoring language tests to the individuum, she works on the individual localisation of language production sites both on the cortex and in subcortical networks in order to preserve quality of life for patients undergoing brain tumour surgery.
