Closed-loop neurostimulation: A new way to manipulate activity of the (sleeping) brain

A recent venue in experimental design regards stimulus presentation guided by electrophysiological brain signals. One such procedure, developed in the presenter's lab, entails the tracking and prediction of oscillatory brain activity. This, in turn, allows fine-tuned manipulations, like precise targeting of acoustic stimuli to any desired phase of brain oscillations. This closed-loop neurostimulation procedure has been used, for instance, to improve sleep and to influence memories during sleep.

This webinar will deal with the technical aspects, scientific relevance and clinical applications of this technology, including the recent development of a headband-based tool that allows closed-loop neurostimulation in home and clinical environments. The scientific presentation will be followed by a virtual product demonstration and a Q&A session.

Dr. Lucia Talamini heads the Sleep and Memory Lab at the University of Amsterdam. Her research, at the interface of neuroscience, psychology and technology, speaks to the role of sleep in memory, other cognitive functions and emotional housekeeping. The lab has a strong emphasis on neurotech development, including advanced methods to read and influence brain activity. These non-invasive brain manipulations have been used, for instance, to deepen sleep and to influence memories during sleep. Dr. Talamini collaborates with several partners in academia and industry to develop clinical, as well as non-clinical applications based on the lab's findings.
